The Importance of Employees’ Competencies: A Comparison between Educational and Business Perspective

Purpose: The purpose of the presented research is to evaluate whether employers’ expectations and needs related competencies potential employees are properly identified by educational institutions do responsible for education training know which considered significant business, if they not what areas discrepancies? Design/Methodology/Approach: was based on comparison between opinions managers companies operating in eastern Poland (381 cases), representatives institutions, universities, vocational, technical secondary schools located this area (389 cases). For each group, self reporting questionnaire designed, participants were asked importance 39 from four groups: social, personal, managerial professional. Obtained values analysed compared groups using Man-Whitney’s U test. Findings: During hierarchies employee established. In opinion managers, most important personal competencies, i.e., scrupulousness, professional work development, time management kindness, least important, whole group but also IT skills, process foreign languages. assume that a set interpersonal least, those grouped ‘managerial’ category. Additionally, gap perception both identified. main differences include (1) slight overestimation all teachers (2) competencies. Practical Implications: There two categories practical implications resulting research. First all, it provides information employers, therefore makes possible gain advantage labour market. Secondly, may be as clear roadmap defining teaching processes should modified order make them more adjusted local companies’ their structure expectations.
